Along with sonatas by Rachmaninov, Shostakovich and Prokofiev, the Second Sonata Op.81 is a repertoire work for cellists, Russian or otherwise, for its vein of melancholy Romanticism that is yet not so dark and introverted as most of the 27 symphonies for which Myaskovsky is best known. Meanwhile the First Sonata has been almost entirely neglected, even by performers so committed to the promotion of their musical heritage as Rostropovich, Gutman and Geringas.
However, as this new recording reveals, it too belongs to the distinctively Russian tradition of soulful and affecting music for the cello; an early example (written in 1911, when Myaskovsky was 30 years of age and yet to graduate; he was a late developer as a composer) of the special empathy for the instrument that would also produce a wonderfully moody and atmospheric cello concerto: the Russian Elgar, perhaps.
The Op.12 Sonata is unusually structured as two movements linked by a tempestuous recitative section. The perfect relationship between the simplicity of the themes and the intensity of the dialogue between soloist and accompaniment is such that the two instruments seem locked in a flurry of warmth and passion. In the finale there is a return to the opening material, culminating in a serene D major conclusion. Though this is an early work, it reveals on various occasions a remarkable degree of maturity.
While the Sonata Op.12 emanates all the captivating freshness of an important work dating from the dawn of the composer’s output, his second sonata is entirely different in mood. It was written between 1948 and 1949, when Myaskovsky was 69, and in the throes of the health problems that were to bring him to his grave the following year.
This is Luca Magariello’s second album for Brilliant Classics, after his participation in the album of complete piano trios by Hummel (BC94898).
Nikolay Myaskovsky (1881-1950) was educated (after a failed schooling for Military Engineer, prompted by his father) at the famous St Petersburg Conservatoire under the tutelage of Rimsky-Korsakov, Lyadov and Glazunov. His musical style has absorbed the nationalistic Russian tradition of these masters, but Myaskovsky widened his horizon by his acquaintance with Richard Strauss and his compatriots Prokofiev and Stravinsky, the former becoming one of his closest friends.
The two Cello Sonatas, presented on this new recording, fully exploit the expressive potential of the instruments, creating a warm, passionate atmosphere in which the flowing melodic lines of the cello are supported by the rich harmonies of the piano.
Italian cellist Luca Magariello won First Prize in the prestigious Khatchaturian Cello Competition, which started his international career.

? Johann Georg Pisendel (1687-1755) was born into a musical family (his
father was Cantor), and from an early age he received lessons as a
chorister and in violin, his teacher being the famous Giuseppe Torelli.
Further studies brought him to Weimar where he met Johann Sebastian
Bach (his near-contemporary) and Leipzig, where he met Telemann. In
1712 he joined the famous court orchestra of Dresden, where he stayed
till his death in 1755.
? The acquaintance and friendship of the two musical giants of the time,
Bach and Telemann, left a firm imprint on him as a composer and
violinist. On the other hand Pisendel’s astonishing virtuosity influenced
Bach to a great extent, Bach’s solo violin sonatas & partitas would not
have been the same without Pisendel.
? This new recording presents three violin sonatas and one violin solo
sonata by Pisendel, works of staggering technical demands, rich in
harmony and freedom of expression. As interludes we hear solo lute
works by Silvius Leopold Weiss.
? Played with immense dedication and conviction by young Polish violinist
Tomasz Aleksander Plusa, who studied with Lucy van Dael, Christoph
Rousset, Simon Standage, Sigiswald Kuijken and others.
A celebration of instrumental Baroque splendour! This set present an anthology of Italian Baroque composers, featuring their instrumental output. Obviously the famous composers have their fair share: Vivaldi, Albinoni, Locatelli, Corelli, but also lesser-known composers are featured: Barsanti, Bassani, Veracini, Nardini, Stradella, Vitali, Mancini, Platti, Legrenze and many more, over 30 composers! Performances by leading ensembles specialized in the Historically Informed Performance Practice: L’Arte dell’Arco/Federico Guglielmo, Ensemble Cordia/Stefano Veggetti, Violini Capricciosi/Igor Ruhadze, Musica Amphion/Pieter-Jan Belder and many more. A treasure trove of solo concertos, concerti grossi, sinfonias, overtures, trio sonatas and solo sonatas from the Golden Era of the Italian Baroque, era of joy, passion and brilliance
This new and expansive collection includes over 30 composers, many of whom are rarely heard in the concert repertoire, including new recordings of Giuseppe Tartini’s Sonatas for violin and Nicola Porpora’s Sonatas for cello. This release also contains some of the most popular Baroque music today – Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Corelli’s Concerti Grossi are present and correct – along with many under-appreciated works of well known composers; Albinoni’s skill as a composer is on show in a rare rendition of his Trattenimenti Armonici, and Scarlatti’s dramatic Sinfonie di concerto grosso also make an appearance.

Prominent Italian composer Paolo Ugoletti (born in 1956) describes his music as follows: “It consists of a theatre of sound, narration, fables and slashes of the imagination. It has something in common with the folly of the Baroque universe, the magical union of creativity and harmony: serried groups of notes, rapid developments, the skilful handling of chiaroscuro and snatched phrases all contribute the effects that culminate in the building of
climaxes”. This new recording presents three concertos by Ugoletti: a violin concerto and two concertos for instruments which seldom get a solo role in classical music: the soprano saxophone and the bass trombone. Attractive, atmospheric music of great imagination!

An extensive collection of horn concertos from several centuries. This set includes horn concertos
by Telemann, Förster, Haydn, Beer, Vivaldi, Quantz, Zelenka, Heinichen, Fick, Reicha, Sperger, Von
Weber, Saint-Saëns, Schumann, Lortzing, Fasch, Mozart, Fiala, Pokorny, Rosetti, R. Strauss,
Schoeck, Pflüger: a true “Cornucopia”!
? The horn as a musical instrument has developed considerably since its first use many centuries ago,
when man blew on animal horns as signal or ritual. The many technical improvements led to the
use of the horn as a versatile solo instrument in the baroque: its festive and jubilant character
could be set off against a smooth and dolce cantabile.
? Excellent performances by a.o. Peter Damm, Felix Klieser, Herman Jeurissen.
? The booklet contains new liner notes, written by Philip Borg-Wheeler specially for this release.
Performers:
Peter Damm, Andrew Joy, Felix Klieser, Herman Jeurissen, Zdeněk & Bedřich Tyslar
Staatskapelle Dresden, Siegfried Kurz conductor
Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Roy Goodman conductor

? Giovanni Morandi (1777-1856) was one of the most important organ
composers of 18-th century Italy, together with Petrali, Davide di
Bergamo and Fumagalli. He was Master of Music of the cathedral of
Senigallia, and wrote a substantial amount of (semi) liturgical works for
organ.
? The formal structures of his organ works, the soaring melodies, brilliant
instrumentation, 'orchestral'-type musical dialogues, the pianistic writing,
and the sonic and dynamic effects all reflect the vast world of Italian
opera in which Morandi was immersed.
? Morandi’s organ works are closely connected to the 18-th century organs
in the Veneto, notably those built by Gaetano Callido. The present
recording takes Morandi's registrations into account, and applies them
both to an important Callido organ (the famous 1791 two-manual
instrument of Borca di Cadore) and a 'modern organ' ? the Lombardy-style
organ built by Amati in 1830 for the parish of Provaglio d'Iseo.
? Organist Marco Ruggeri made already several excellent recordings for
Brilliant Classics: Petrali organ works (BC95160) and Padre Davide

? The seven-string guitar appeared in Russia in the 1790s and experienced
its Golden Age during the first half of the 19th century. This Box Set is a
monument to this remarkable era.
? The 7 CD’s of this set follow chronologically the development of the
guitar in Russia: from the very first works by the “Patriarch of the Russian
guitar” Andrey Sichra, through the Muscovite School of Aksionov,
Vysotsky and Vetrov, the St. Petersburg School with works by Morkov
and others, to the Romantics Alexandrov, Zimmerman and Sarenko.
? Also included are songs accompanied by the guitar and chamber music in
which the guitar has a prominent part.
? A unique project, played by master guitarist Oleg Timofeyev as soloist,
seconded by second guitarist John Schneiderman. Timofeyev wrote the
extensive and scholarly liner notes himself.
? With artist biographies and extensive liner notes written by the artist.

Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) was one of the most important and successful
composers of the Neapolitan School in Italy. His fame was widespread as
he worked in the European capitals London, Dresden and Vienna, where
his works were successfully staged.
Porpora was also a singer and teacher, which explains the strong vocal
quality of his instrumental works. The 6 Cello Sonatas recorded on this CD
try to emulate the “vox humana”, expressing the human emotions
through instrumental virtuosity and phrasing.
The manuscript of the 6 Cello Sonatas lists Porpora and Constanzi as
composers, but very probably the works were written by Porpora alone.
Beautiful performances by Adriano Fazio, cello and an instrumental
continuo ensemble featuring violin, cello, theorbo and harpsichord.
