Little is known about the life of Spanish composer Juan Vásquez, fl. 16th century. A skilled and successful composer, he was in the service of the King of Spain. His compositions are mainly secular, in the form of polyphonic madrigals and “Villancicos”, popular songs set for a vocal ensemble of 3 or 4 voices. The Villancicos are based on folk music and traditional texts, peasant melodies brimming with joy, happiness and Spanish vitality! Performed with infectious enthusiasm by the Spanish Early Music group Vandalia, consisting of 4 excellent vocal soloists, accompanied by the Iberian Harp. The booklet contains scholarly liner notes, biography and full texts, both
the original Spanish and the English translation.
The booklet includes a comprehensive introduction to the music of Vásquez, original sung texts and modern English translations.

? Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer (1656-1746) was born in Bohemia, and
was active as a Kapellmeister at the Saxon-Lauenburg court for a
staggering 60 years.
? Fischer introduced the French keyboard style to Germany, a sign of the
German court’s efforts to emulate the grand way of living and culture of
Versailles and its Sun King. His keyboard suites have French titles: Pieces
de Clavessin, suites of courtly dances. His style is a fusion of the elaborate
and ornamented French style and the German Stylus Phantasticus of his
compatriots Froberger and Buxtehude.
? Tony Millán is one of Spain’s foremost keyboard players, he is equally at
home in the Baroque as in the 20th century. He plays a magnificent copy
of a Christian Vater harpsichord (1738), built by Andrea Restelli, using the
Tartini-Vallotti temperament.

? Giovanni Paisiello (1740-1816) is one of the key composers of the
Neapolitan School, primarily famous for his vast amount of operas
written when in the service of Ferdinand IV of Naples.
? Paisiello’s instrumental output is also substantial, and it was written for
the ever growing bourgeoisie, for domestic use by advanced amateurs.
His 6 Flute Quartets are delightful works, full of charming, sunny
melodies and sparkling virtuosity, in the true tradition of the Neapolitan
School, as comparable with Cimarosa and Guglielmi.
? The Italian ensemble Il Demetrio specialises in Baroque and Early Classical
music, playing on authentic instruments.

Johann Melchior Molter was born in 1696 in Thüringen, where his musical
talent was quickly recognised. He served in the orchestra at the court of
Karlsruhe. Later he broadened his horizon by going to Italy, where he
encountered Albinoni, Vivaldi and Alessandro Scarlatti. He imbued their
melodious gifts, studied their instrumental skills and went home to
Karlsruhe, where he spent the rest of his life as court composer.
? Molter’s works are festive and ceremonial, a happy mix of German
counterpoint, Italian brilliance and French grandeur.
? This new recording presents an attractive variety of orchestral works and
cantatas: a Symphony, an Overture, a Flute Concerto and Oboe Sonata,
combined with two Italian secular cantatas, dealing with the vicissitudes
of love.
? Performed on period instruments by the Camerata Bachiensis, soprano
Julia Kirchner and Roberto de Franceschi, playing the oboe and traverso.

? Angelo Gilardino is one of the most important guitar composers of the last
half century. His unique style is a blend of the old and new, folk art and
contemporary music, from Mozart to Messiaen, all his works are
illuminated by a warm and mediterranean glow, a feeling of humanity and
love for life.
? This new recording shows Gilardino’s special affinity to Sicily, the island of
beauty and darkness. The first title, Aux Pays Parfumé, says it all: written
for the unusal combination of guitar and harpsichord is draws a subtle and
scented image of the enchanted island. Also included are the solo guitar
work Capriccio Etneo (a musical image of mount Etna) and the Concertino
di Hykkara for guitar and chamber orchestra.

? Michel Corrette (1707-1795) was born in a musical family, his father was
organist, his grandfather dancing master. He was a famous composer,
teacher and organist, his long lifetime seeing the cultural change from the
Baroque to the Classical era. This transformation is also apparent in his
music, from the strict and elaborate Baroque forms to the charming and
transparent classical language.
? Corrette’s intriguingly titled “Les délices de la solitude” is a series of
sonatas for viola da gamba, cello, bassoon and continuo, an unusual
combination of dark and rich instrumental colours. The language is lyrical,
dramatic, with a predominance of the melody, full of rhythmic elasticity
and emotional tension.
? Played by the Italian group Opera Prima, led by violist Cristiano Contadin,
who already recorded a superb Telemann 5CD set on Brilliant classics
(BC94831), which was CD of the Month in CLASSIC VOICE.
