This new recording contains Brahms’ complete music in which the viola
plays a solo part: the two Sonatas Op. 120 and the 2 Gesänge Op. 91, for
alto, viola and piano.
Brahms’ two viola sonatas are masterworks of his late style: the perfect
handling of the sonata form sets the structure for autumnal
reminiscenses and melancholic introspection, alternated by either
passionate or tender interludes.
Beautiful performances by violist Luca Sanzo and pianist Maurizio
Paciariello, who made an excellent recording of Hindemith’s Viola
Sonatas for Brilliant Classics (BC94782): “Strong performance….a real
winner” (Musicweb).
A special treat is the voice of Sara Mingardo in the Zwei Gesänge, one of
the foremost altos of today, who sung with Claudio Abbado, Riccardo
Chailly, Myung-Whun-Chung, Rinaldo Alessandrini.

A wonderful selection of concertos and other works featuring the flute from the 18th and 19th centuries, this box showcases 14 composers who championed the flute, each in their own way, with refined and idiomatic music for the instrument. Vivaldi and Alessandro Scarlatti (father in the musical Scarlatti family) were active during the 1720s, an era of transition from the end-blown recorder to the more powerful and easily tuned side-blown transverse flute common today. The works in this set by Scarlatti include concertos for both, while the modern flute is the star of the remaining music, from Vivaldi’s complete Op.10 concertos through to the fine F minor concerto by Büchner, a 19th-century German composer active in Russia.
C.P.E Bach, Benda and Quantz all served in the court of Frederick the Great – a gifted amateur flute player who demanded works for his instrument from the musicians in his employ – and this accounts for the great contribution these three composers made to the repertoire. From later in the 18th century we have the inventive and idiomatic flute music of Mozart, along with that of several of his contemporaries, Germans Danzi and Hoffmeister, the Bohemian Rosetti, and the Frenchman Devienne, whose worthy music was thankfully revived in the 1960s by Jean-Pierre Rampal. Joining Büchner in the 19th century are the Italian Mercadante and Swiss-born Du Puy who was active in Scandinavia. Both noted opera composers, their sense for breath and melodic line no doubt informed their fine flute music.
Soloists of international calibre and renown perform with equally noteworthy ensembles in recordings spanning four decades: from Patrick Gallois’s recent outings in Sweden (Devienne) and Finland (Mercadante) and Ginevra Petrucci’s renditions of Du Puy and Büchner with Milan’s acclaimed Pomeriggi Musicali to timeless interpretations from Johannes Walter and the Staatskapelle Dresden (Mozart), Machiko Takahashi with the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, and Hungarian virtuosos András Adorján (Benda, Danzi) and János Szebenyi (Hoffmeister, Rosetti).
Authentic performance is also represented in this 12CD set, with Mario Folena joining Vivaldi specialists Federico Guglielmo and L’Arte dell’Arco, and Federico Maria Sardelli and Ugo Galasso soloing on both flute and recorder with Modo Antiquo – all on period instruments. Iceland’s Nordic Affect period ensemble features Georgia Browne in flute music by Abel, who wrote his chamber works for his pioneering London subscription concerts, organised with his friend J.C. Bach.
Another special feature in this treasure box of flute gems is Mary Oleskiewicz’s world premiere recording on Baroque transverse flute of four concertos by Quantz, a composer synonymous with the flute for his important contributions to the instrument’s pedagogy, technology and repertoire.
This 12 CD set contains a generous collection of solo concertos for the most popular of wind instruments, the flute.
Traversing more than two centuries the collection presents concertos by the great Baroque Masters Vivaldi, C.P.E. Bach and Alessandro Scarlatti, continuing into the classical era with concertos by Abel, Mozart, Benda, Danzi, Hoffmeister, Rosetti and Quantz, and finally arriving in the romantic era with Devienne, Mercadante, Dupuy and Büchner.
Performed by world famous flutists such as Patrick Gallois, András Adorján and Ginevra Petrucci.
A treasure trove of the known and lesser known, a feast of sparkling, melodious and brilliant flute concertos for both the serious collector and the classical starter!
Recorded between 1975 and 2014.

? The Stabat Mater is one of the most moving liturgical works, meditating
upon the suffering of Mary during the crucifixion of her Son. It draws forth
the deepest human emotions of anxiety, desolation and grief.
? Boccherini, known for his vast oeuvre of instrumental chamber music,
wrote his Stabat Mater for one solo soprano and string ensemble, an
intimate setting for this emotional text.
? Soprano Francesca Boncompagni is a specialist in the Baroque repertoire,
she worked with William Christie, Philippe Herreweghe, Ottavio Dantone
and Federico Maria Sardelli. She recorded for DHM, Virgin, Pentatone and
Brilliant Classics.
? The Ensemble Symposium plays original instruments, and give a wonderful
performance of the String Quartet Op. 41 No. 1.

A previous Brilliant Classics release from the organist Sergio Militello (BC94483) offered an attractive taster course to the music of the most distinguished family in music history. Now, having recorded the complete organ works of both the family’s supreme craftsman and genius (BC95105), and a North-German predecessor Johann Kuhnau (BC95089), Stefano Molardi turns his attention to two earlier members of the Bach family who have inevitably been obscured by the shadow cast by Johann Sebastian.
In fact as uncle to JS, Johann Christoph Bach exercised a significant influence over his musical education, as composer, organist and indeed organ-designer. Sacred vocal works such as the Requiem have been revived in recent times, but the scant surviving proportion of his keyboard music has received too little critical attention. They comprise a prelude and fugue, and three cycles of variations on chorales. The ‘free’ pieces reveal an inventive spirit, fantasy, a certain skill in handling counterpoint and the use of expressive devices which show him no less open than his nephew to the exuberant vitality of the Italian tradition represented by Frescobaldi and Monteverdi.
Brother of Johann Christoph, Johann Michael was also father to the Maria Barbara who became Johann Sebastian’s first wife. He too worked in the town of Arnstadt where the 18-year-old Johann Sebastian took up his first post in what is now appropriately known as the ‘Bach Church’. Doubtless J.M. Bach’s production was no less industrious than his brother, if scarcely matching his nephew, but the only extant organ works are chorale settings – 24 of them – which elaborate flowing counterpoint over and around the familiar hymn melodies such as In dulci jubilo and Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.
On this release, Stefano Molardi plays a finely preserved instrument from 1732-37 by Franciscus Volckland in the Cruciskirche of Erfurt, just a quarter-hour’s car drive from Arnstadt. In considering the fourth volume of Molardi’s Bach survey (BC95005), Early Music Review took note of the Erfurt organ’s striking variety of tone colour, and praised his playing for its ‘considerable clarity’ and lack of histrionics, ‘without extremes of registration or tempi – just what you need for the purposes of study or reference.’
A FIRST RECORDING: the complete organ works by Johann Michael and Johann Christoph Bach! Johann Michael (1648-1694) and Johann Christoph (1642-1703) were brothers, and nephew of the great Johann Sebastian. The daughter of Johann Michael was Maria Barbara, the first wife of Johann Sebastian, and therefore mother of both Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach.
The Bach dynasty held a long tradition of composers and performers. Both brothers were firmly rooted in the Central German organ school, with a strong emphasis on counterpoint, while also under the Italian influence of vocal melodies and fluent lines.
The greatest part of both brother’s oeuvre consists of Choralvorspiele, while Johann Christoph wrote some substantial variation cycles.
Played on the historic 1732 Volckland organ of the Cruciskirche in Erfurt, Germany, by Stefano Molardi, one of the foremost organists of Italy, whose Kuhnau recording for Brilliant Classics was longlisted for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

A unique project: the combination of church organ and percussion
instruments performing early Italian keyboard music!
The early keyboard music manuscripts not only included organ music for
liturgical use, but also collections of dances, such as pavana, gagliarda,
ricercada, saltarello, balletto and canzona. The strong rhythmical element
in these works is enhanced on this new recording by the use of
percussion instruments as were in use in popular music of that period:
drums, rattles, sticks, castagnets, claves, sistrum and such exotic
instruments as def, djembe, darbuka and tammorra.
The composers of these works include Giovanni Picchi, Marco Cavazzoni,
Gioseffo Guami, Christofano Malvezzi and Giovanni Trabaci. The organ on this recording is an historical instrument built in 1551 by
Onofrio Zeffirini.
A fascinating disc presenting some exciting and entertaining music
performed in a way never heard before, by renowned organist Luca
Scandali and percussionist Mauro Occhionero.
The booklet provides the necessary background information on the
music, the composers and the instruments used.

In preparation of the Telemann year 2017: a new recording of the solo
oboe concertos!
Georg Philipp Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in music
history, his many works however all share a freshness, originality and
brilliance which shows the true genius of this too long neglected Baroque
composer, contemporary of Bach and Handel.
The six concertos recorded on this disc are for solo oboe or
oboe’d’amore. Most of them were written in Telemann’s Hamburg
period. They are clearly modelled on the concertos by Vivaldi and
Albinoni, italianate melodies of great melodic charm and beauty,
alternate with brilliant figurations and instrumental virtuosity.
Excellent performances by Andrius Puskunigis and his Lithuanian
ensemble St Christopher Chamber orchestra conducted by Donatas
Katkus, following the principals of Historically Informed Performance
Practice while playing modern instruments. Puskunigis’ earlier recording
of Bach Oboe Concertos (BC 94991) received excellent reviews, praising
his vitality, flexibility and “Spielfreude”.
Andrius Puskunigis oboe & oboe d'amore

This is the third album of the Latvian oboist
Andrius Puskunigis to appear on Brilliant
Classics, after highly successful releases of
Bach (BC94991) and Classical (BC95218)
oboe concertos, which won won
international praise for their technical
transparency and stylish exuberance.

? The Prelude, originally a short, often quasi-improvised, introduction to a
work of larger proportions, gained in the course of musical history a new
form, developing into a separate and free structure in which the composer
lets his imagination free reign.
? Jeroen van Veen, champion of Minimal Music, about his own Preludes:
“composed in a major and minor keys in the order of Chopin’s Preludes
the basic idea was to see if I would limit myself to just a few chords and
techniques if I could create different works. Of course I was inspired by the
great classical masters; I tried to combine the order of Chopin, the pianotechniques
by Franz Liszt and Sergei Rachmaninoff, the polyrhythmic by
Philip Glass, the sound of Simeon ten Holt and the rhythms of Steve Reich.
Each piece has its own character, starting from a minimalistic point of
view: less is more.
? A very personal and fascinating statement from one of the most notable
interpreters of Minimal Music: Jeroen van Veen!

? Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) was one of the most original and
well-known romantic American composers. Born into a wealthy family he
started studying the piano at an early age, and went to Europe for further
education, an essential rite of passage for any aspiring American
musician. In Europe he got acquainted with the Avant Garde of that time:
Debussy, Ravel, Scriabin, Schoenberg. On his return in the States he
developed his own personal style, influenced by his love for literature
and poetry.
? Griffes’ style is fundamentally romantic, with occasional influences of
impressionism. This new recording contains his complete works for piano:
the ambitious Piano Sonata and several collections of character pieces
with titles such as “The Lake at Evening” and “The Vale of Dreams”.
? Excellent performances by Italian pianist Emanuele Torquati, who already
made successful recordings for Brilliant Classics of piano music by Roussel
(BC94329) and Zemlinsky (BC95067).
? Booklet notes written by the artist, in both English and Italian.
