The Nostalgic Beauty of Abandoned Cars
The first photography book of abandoned cars, covering Europe and the United States A fascinating and artful addition to any car lover’s library, and for those intrigued by mysterious, forgotten places Each featured car is identified by year and make The book comes without plastic wrapping
In his unique photo journey, Dieter Klein travels to remote corners of Europe and the United States to find abandoned cars in forgotten places.
In shabby backyards and dusty barns, in deserted fields and thick forests, Klein roams strange and isolated places to find once gleaming vehicles left to rust and ruin. From a dented Porsche to a faded Cadillac, a battered VW Beetle to a whole fleet of abandoned military jeeps, Klein’s subjects creak with bygone glamour and might. As moss and gnarled branches transform motors into eerie artifacts, Klein’s award-winning automobile photography is not only a tribute to classic cars, but also to the transformative power of nature and the enduring intrigue of people and incidents unknown.
Dieter Klein is a freelance photographer. A piece he wrote about robots won him the award for best reportage from the magazine Bild der Wissenschaft in 2003. But his true passion is the imagery of deserted automobiles. It won him prizes for best photograph at Discovery Days 2017, in Switzerland, as well as at Festival El Mundo 2018, in Austria. Dieter Klein regularly gives presentations and puts on slide shows about Lost Wheels and Forest Punk.

Precisions on the Present State of Architecture and City Planning, or Precisions, as the book is commonly known, originated from a series of ten lectures presented by Le Corbusier in Buenos Aires in 1929. Concise summations of the Swiss-born French architect’s pioneering philosophy, the lectures contain some of Le Corbusier’s most compelling aphorisms and cover topics ranging from technique, design and human scale, and the 1927 League of Nations competition to the teaching of architecture and an analysis of the transformation of his own work over time.
This new edition presents the Precisions lectures to a new audience. During the lectures, Le Corbusier punctuated his points with a series of improvised crayon-on-paper drawings. This is the first edition to reproduce all forty drawings in color. The book also includes Le Corbusier’s introduction, appended in the 1960s, which describes the tremendous impact the city of Buenos Aires had on the architect—its beauty and vast potential, as well as the considerable challenges presented by this city “trembling on the verge of great works.” A new additional essay by Tim Benton places the lectures in context with the larger body of Le Corbusier’s work. Finally, an appendix has been added with brief descriptions of key figures and events discussed.

After the Middle Ages, concrete fell into oblivion and was only rediscovered around 1700. Through constant further development and improvement, it became the most widely used building material of our time. New and innovative applications make it an incredibly valuable design tool for contemporary architectural concepts as its properties and appearances can be influenced by the respective mixture of components.
The creative potential is almost inexhaustible. As versatile as this malleable material presents itself, it requires the skill and passion of its planners to create esthetically convincing solutions. The publication shows the enormous relevance and inimitable fascination of concrete in impressive imagery and versed texts with all relevant facts.

“Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together. There it begins.” Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Buildings made of brick are found in very different epochs and cultures all over the world. Always astonishing, the qualities of brickwork continue to be explored by the world’s best architects until today. A key characteristic of the material’s success since time immemorial has always been the ease of planning due to its standardized production and the resulting harmonized building processes. In addition to longevity, amazing constructive possibilities as well as inexpensive and at the same time environmentally friendly production are among the qualities that are particularly valued today. Using computer software solutions, and even robots in some cases, today’s architects are deploying brick in inventive ways: perforated, pixelated, undulating and more.
The featured works from the past and present are a demonstration of how the use and popularity of bricks has not diminished one bit over the millennia, and is even gaining popularity today.
A multitude of photographs and architectural drawings illustrate the rehabilitation process of over 30 projects, from concept to construction
Informative material provides ideas for home improvements that can add to a property’s value
Homeowners, designers, architects, and builders will be inspired and informed by the creative and instructive ideas included in the book
The book is a compendium of homes, including apartments and single-family houses, that have been remodeled to suit contemporary lifestyle needs.Rehabilitations of living spaces are often done to reanimate existing constructions that, over time, have become impractical, if not obsolete. The challenge is to adapt these existing buildings to contemporary standards while maintaining what might still be useful or what we like about them. Most old buildings are very compartmentalized, reflecting the human habits of their time and the available building technology. Nowadays, we like to live in much more open and airy spaces—and new building methods allow for the removal of walls that ultimately free up space. We renovate and upgrade living spaces to various degrees, ranging anywhere from upgrading fixtures and appliances to removing and reconstructing walls and expanding buildings. While extensive work is sometimes required, these rehabilitations can result in stunning transformations. Many add comfort and increase utility, not to mention that the investment generally adds value to the property. This inspirational book showcases a range of rehabili- tated projects, from ones that begin by totally stripping out interiors to a clean slate, to less extensive work that might be limited to cosmetic changes or simple finish and fixture upgrades. Existing dwellings have proved themselves flexible to changing necessities, and they are key to the regeneration of our living environment.
Macarena Abascal Valdenebro lives and works in Barcelona, collaborating on many architectural and interior design books with booq Publishing. She has recently been the author of the titles, Tiny Homesand Small Home Gardens—both of which have been translated and published in several languages.

So sings Don Henley on their biggest hit, ‘Hotel California’, and it is true that the Eagles story was one that blurred the ultimate Hollywood highs and subterranean LA lows beyond recognition.
The band that embodied the American dream with globe-straddling success, impossibly luxurious lives, almost supernatural talent also descended into nightmare with bloodletting betrayal, hate-filled hubris, the skeletons of perceived enemies, brutally discarded lovers and former band mates left unburied on the road behind them. The story of the Eagles is a truly gothic American fable: one of ultimate power and rivers of money; of sex and drugs at a time when both were the lingua-franca of sophisticated So-Cal living; of a band who sang of peaceful easy feelings in public while threatening to kill each other in private.
Now, for the first time, esteemed music biographer Mick Wall will provide the definitive insight into America’s bestselling band of all time, a band who have sold more records than Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones combined, exploring their meteoric rise to fame and the hedonistic days of the 70s music scene in LA, when American music was taking over the world.
What do the music of Bach, Depeche Mode and John Cage fundamentally have in common?' Music is an obsession at the heart of human nature, even more fundamental to our species than language. From Mozart to the Beatles, neuroscientist, psychologist and internationally-bestselling author Daniel Levitin reveals the role of music in human evolution, shows how our musical preferences begin to form even before we are born and explains why music can offer such an emotional experience. In This Is Your Brain On Music Levitin offers nothing less than a new way to understand music, and what it can teach us about ourselves.

Over the past decade, China’s new generation of young female architects have proven themselves to be talented, confident, innovative and successful on the world stage. Engaging with traditions and international trends, as well as posing entirely new architectural ideas, their projects reveal China to be a place brimming with energy and creative possibility.
This survey of twenty of China’s latest generation features detailed profiles of each architect, exploring their routes to success, their inspirations and the challenges posed for those working and designing in this diverse and rapidly evolving region. Each profile includes works from small-scale conceptual plans to country houses, schools, offices and large-scale urban development projects. From exploring new ways to build with radical, sustainable materials to sensitively honouring the vernacular traditions of the country’s long and complex history, each architect brings her unique vision to the question of what architecture means in China today. Zhang Xin, one of the country’s most successful women entrepreneurs, puts these achievements in context.
The most densely populated country on earth, China is metamorphosizing from a mainly rural to an urbanized economy faster than any nation has done so before. Responding to real social and political changes, the architects featured here will define China’s skylines for many years to come.
