Stanisław Fijałkowski (1922-2020) boasts a direct connection to the very origins of the European avant-garde – he was an assistant of Wladyslaw Strzeminski, who in turn had studied under Kazimir Malevich.
Throughout six decades Fijałkowski maintained a solely unique idiom of mystical painting, hovering between the abstract and the representational. He also explored the subject theoretically and translated into Polish several important texts, including Wassily Kandinsky’s On the Spiritual in Art.
Fijałkowski was also an accomplished engraver, with prints in the collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York and Tate Britain. Jego życie objęło niemal cały wiek dwudziesty. W czasie Rewolucji był studentem w Petersburgu, w szalonych latach dwudziestych – malarzem w Paryżu. Jako polski oficer rezerwy wróciwszy do ojczyzny walczył z Niemcami na początku II wojny światowej, przez Sowietów został wzięty do niewoli i cudem ocalał z masakry tysięcy jego towarzyszy broni. Potem nie wrócił do Polski, pracował w powojennym Paryżu, zdając relacje z tragicznego położenia swojego kraju niszczonego przez totalitarny ustrój. Czapski, potrafiący wykraczać poza własne dostrzeżone niepowodzenia, odnotowuje zniechęcenie faktem, że zdołał uchwycić tylko odrobinę ich witalności. „Kiedy rysujesz, czujesz każdą kreskę prowadzoną na papierze jako coś żyjącego, nieodwołalnego, i naraz rysunek zaczyna żyć. (…) Potem dwie – jedną kreską – notatki tulipanów wydały mi się nagle żywiej istniejące. Dlaczego?
