Illustration is no longer just illustration. Today, illustrators write and create children's picture books and graphic novels; they structure information through infographics; they design logos, fonts, and other typographical applications; they contribute to the editorial design of newspapers and magazines; they apply their talents to advertising and fashion; and they develop and produce their own products on the basis of their creations. Despite the fact that all of these activities are based on illustration, each of them has its own rules and its own specialists, tasks, and job descriptions to go along with them.
Against this background, A Life in Illustration gives an insider‘s look at the diverse facets of this creative medium through extensive portraits of today‘s leading illustrators. Perceptive texts and images describe the work and day-to-day activities of outstanding talents including Christoph Niemann, Andrea Ventura, Jan Van Der Veken, Peter Grundy, Jessica Hische, and the New York Times’s Jonathan Corum.
Dubbed the enfant terrible of fashion ever since his prêt-à-porter collections were first shown in 1976, Jean Paul Gaultier, whose avant-garde and bold fashions very early on reflected the issues facing contemporary society, is one of the leading designers in recent decades.
Published by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Abrams in conjunction with the first-ever retrospective on Gaultier, this stunning hardcover book in a slipcase explores the ties between the designer and the pop/rock music scene, film, and dance, and sheds light on his sources of inspiration, which are as eclectic as they are impertinent.
The first major monograph on Gaultier brings together archival documents and over fifty interviews with Gaultier’s muses and colleagues, as well as the artists he has created costumes for: Pedro Almodóvar, Catherine Deneuve, Madonna, Helen Mirren, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Martin Margiela, Pierre Cardin, Dita Von Teese, Marion Cotillard, Kylie Minogue, Polly Mellen, and Tom Ford, to name just a few.
It features many previously unpublished illustrations thanks to the collaboration of renowned fashion photographers and the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier. The publication also includes two interviews with Gaultier, one by Florence Müller, art historian, and the other by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, as well as an interview with Valerie Steele, fashion historian and director of New York’s Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). An essay written by Suzy Menkes looks at Gaultier’s fashion shows and examines their visionary reflection of society’s evolution over the past thirty-five years.
From the refined homes of Tokyo to the nightclubs of Kyoto; from gangster chic to Harajuku street style; from ateliers and catwalks to city sidewalks and religious festivals—this book shows how the kimono has continued to be one of Japan’s most exciting wardrobe elements.
Lee Alexander McQueen (1969-2010) is widely recognized as one of the leading fashion designers of his time, whose work combined esthetic vision, emotional power, and extraordinary craft. He was especially known for staging provocative shows that were as much performances as venues to display his designs. Charged with energy, informed by history and culture, and filled with fresh concepts, they have become legends not only of fashion but also of art. Shooting backstage, photographer Anne Deniau documented twenty-six of these shows, beginning in September 1997 and ending with the final one in October 2010. Working directly for McQueen, she produced a remarkable and previously unpublished photographic record that captures the intensity and immediacy of these events. We see McQueen working with his close circle of collaborators--among them, designer Sarah Burton, milliner Philip Treacy, jewelry designer Shaun Leane, model Kate Moss. The meticulously produced spectacles that they created come back to life on the page in this inside look at the work of a great artist.
Art plays an important role in the life and design of both Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. Schiaparelli's collaborations with the Surrealists Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteau, and Prada's interest in and support of contemporary artists, as reflected in the collections and galleries of the Fondazione Prada, have brought art and fashion into close proximity, in a direct, synergistic, and culturally redefining relationship. It seems especially fitting, therefore, that their inventive creations be the subject of an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations considers the striking affinities between these two iconic Italian designers from different eras: Schiaparelli, who worked in Paris from the 1920s until her house closed in 1954, and Prada, who took over her family's Milan-based business in 1978. Inspired by Miguel Covarrubias's "Impossible Interviews" for Vanity Fair in the 1930s, Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton, respectively Curator in Charge and Curator of The Costume Institute, conceived of this exhibition and accompanying publication as a series of imaginary conversations between these women to suggest new readings of their most innovative work.
Fashion is a powerful thing. It can be used for self-expression, to make a political statement, or simply to attract the eye. Here the Design Museum looks at the style of fifty trendsetters - from Twiggy to Wallis Simpson, Tilda Swinton to Michelle Obama - who have used fashion to make their mark on the world.

The chapters cover natural forms; geometric forms; rules and borders; wreaths, borders and scrolls; and pictorial ornaments. The last chapter charts the rise of the graphic designer over the last century, and how modern designers are now reinterpreting these typographic ornaments into new forms of art.
The Little Book of Typographic Ornament is an invaluable reference for graphic designers, as well as providing a source of copyright-free images.
When German photographer Peter Lindbergh shot five young models in downtown New York City in 1989, he produced not only the iconic British Vogue January 1990 cover but also the birth certificate of the supermodels. The image didn’t just bring revered faces together for the first time, it marked the beginning of a new fashion era and a new understanding of female beauty.
This book gathers more than 400 images from four decades of Lindbergh’s photography to celebrate his unique and game-changing storytelling and the new romantic and narrative vision it brought to art and fashion.
Whether in striking single portraits or dramatic situations of figure and setting, we trace the photographer’s cinematic inflections and his provocative play with female archetypes as subjects adopt the guise of dancers, actresses, heroines, and femmes fatales. Raw and seductive at once, we see how Lindbergh’s trademark monochrome pictures also redefined standards of beauty by emphasizing spirit and personality as much as looks, celebrating the elegance and sensuality of older women, and privileging natural and authentic beauty in an era of pervasive retouching.
In a testimony to Lindbergh’s illustrious status in the fashion world, his images are contextualized by commentaries from collaborators such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Nicole Kidman, Grace Coddington, Cindy Crawford, and Anna Wintour, who chose Lindbergh to shoot her first US Vogue cover. Their tributes explain just what makes Lindbergh’s images so unique and powerful.
Bret Easton Ellis is most famous for his era-defining novel American Psycho and its terrifying anti-hero, Patrick Bateman. With that book, and many times since, Ellis proved himself to be one of the world’s most fearless and clear-sighted observers of society – the glittering surface and the darkness beneath.
In White, his first work of non-fiction, Ellis offers a wide-ranging exploration of what the hell is going on right now. He tells personal stories from his own life. He writes with razor-sharp precision about the music, movies, books and TV he loves and hates. He examines the ways our culture, politics and relationships have changed over the last four decades. He talks about social media, Hollywood celebrities and Donald Trump.
Ellis considers conflicting positions without flinching and adheres to no status quo. His forthright views are powered by a fervent belief in artistic freedom and freedom of speech. Candid, funny, entertaining and blisteringly honest, he offers opinions that are impossible to ignore and certain to provoke.
What he values above all is the truth. ‘The culture at large seemed to encourage discourse,’ he writes, ‘but what it really wanted to do was shut down the individual.’ Bret Easton Ellis will not be shut down.

We are living in an age of heightened individualism. Success is a personal responsibility. Our culture tells us that to succeed is to be slim, rich, happy, extroverted, popular – flawless.
The pressure to conform to this ideal has changed who we are. We have become self-obsessed. And our expectation of perfection comes at a cost. Millions are suffering under the torture of this impossible fantasy.
It was not always like this. To explain how we got here, Will Storr takes us on a journey across continents and centuries. Full of thrilling and unexpected connections between history, psychology, economics, neuroscience and more, Selfie is an unforgettable book that makes sense of who we have become.

Książka Józefa Poklewskiego bez wątpienia spełnia wszelkie kryteria pracy naukowej. Jej wysokie walory merytoryczne wynikają z dogłębnej znajomości omawianych zagadnień, bogatego naukowego doświadczenia Autora – profesora historii sztuki. Dzieło przemawia erudycją i znakomitym warsztatem. Ugruntowane źródłową wiedzą fakty, skrupulatnie przedstawiane w toku pełnej polotu narracji, jak też obszerna, rzeczowa charakterystyka i wnikliwa analiza zjawisk czynią z książki Józefa Poklewskiego kompendium wiedzy znacząco wzbogacające stan badań nad życiem artystycznym i kulturalnym Wilna – ważnego komponentu polskiej kultury i sztuki II Rzeczypospolitej.
W części teoretycznej publikacja dotyczy miejsca nauk humanistycznych, kulturoznawstwa i teorii literatury w społeczeństwie, w części analitycznej ukazuje zaangażowanie społeczne, odbiór społeczny psalmów traktowanych jako pierwowzór zaangażowanej literatury.

„Animatorzy artystycznej kultury studenckiej w środowisku akademickim. Typologia” to książka autorstwa Jerzego Norberta Grzegorka, która może pobudzić dialog nad rolą i funkcjami animacji, a szczególnie animatorów artystycznej kultury środowiska studenckiego, z którego zwykle rekrutują się przyszli animatorzy kultury – profesjonalni i nieprofesjonalni, jako inicjatorzy i kreatorzy aktywności kulturalnej. Autor stworzył i zaprezentował niezwykle interesującą typologię animatorów: chóralnego, teatralnego, kabaretowego, klubowego, senioralnego, dydaktycznego, radiowego, filmowego i literackiego.

Zaprezentowano w nim około czterdziestu pięciu zabytków historycznych miasta i okolic, ułożonych w porządku geograficznym, np. nowogrodzkiego kremla, soboru katedralnego Sofii, siedziby arcybiskupów nowogrodzkich, Dworu Jarosławowego, Targu, siedzib kupców hanzeatyckich, Grodziszcza Rurykowego.
Nowogród Wielki, jedno z wielu miast w europejskiej części współczesnej Rosji, położone – jak śpiewał Jacek Kaczmarski – „wśród pól i rozlewisk”, to prawdziwa enigma.
