After Egon Schiele (1890–1918) freed himself from the shadow of his mentor and role model Gustav Klimt, he had just ten years to inscribe his signature style into the annals of modernity before the Spanish flu claimed his life. Being a child prodigy quite aware of his own genius and a passionate provocateur, this didn’t prove to be too big a challenge.
His haggard, overstretched figures, extreme depiction of sexuality and self-portraits, in which he staged himself with emaciated facial expressions bordering between brilliance and madness, had none of the decorative quality of Klimt’s hymns of love, sexuality and yearning devotion. Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German-born biologist, naturalist, evolutionist, artist, philosopher, and doctor who spent his life researching flora and fauna from the highest mountaintops to the deepest ocean. A vociferous supporter and developer of Darwin’s theories of evolution, he denounced religious dogma, authored philosophical treatises, gained a doctorate in zoology, and coined scientific terms which have passed into common usage, including ecology, phylum, and stem cell.
At the heart of Haeckel’s colossal legacy was the motivation not only to discover but also to explain. To do this, he created hundreds of detailed drawings, watercolors, and sketches of his findings which he published in successive volumes, including several marine organism collections and the majestic Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), which could serve as the cornerstone of Haeckel’s entire life project. Like a meticulous visual encyclopedia of living things, Haeckel’s work was as remarkable for its graphic precision and meticulous shading as for its understanding of organic evolution. The life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30–1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba’s brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content.
Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He then increasingly turned to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. Rather than idealizing reality, he bravely confronted the issues of his day, addressing the horrors of religious warfare and taking a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, Bruegel developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions.

Krakowski Rynek jest… morzem, czyli przestrzenią. Kiedy w połowie lat sześćdziesiątych, pod opieką naszej pani, wyruszyłem z małego miasteczka w Małopolsce na pierwszą klasową wycieczkę nad Bałtyk, zobaczyłem z perspektywy wydmy w Łebie ów bezmiar i – oniemiałem! Nigdy wcześniej nie doświadczyłem czegoś tak dużego, rozległego, bezkresnego i tajemniczego. To, co ujrzałem, przerosło dziecięcy horyzont mojego świata, a małe miasteczko, w którym mieszkałem, stało się od tej pory jeszcze mniejsze. Poczułem, że to, co „bezbrzeżne” i „nieogarnione” – już na zawsze zawładnie moją wyobraźnią. Rzecz bowiem w tym, że na horyzoncie Bałtyku nie było nic! Żadnego śladu człowieka, żadnej ulicy czy kamienicy, no nic i nic! Nawet Szwecji nie było widać. Jedynie linia, która oddzielała jeden błękit od drugiego, nieco jaśniejszego. Prawdę mówiąc, oniemieliśmy wszyscy, nawet mój wiecznie rozgadany kumpel Józek Babula. Dopiero potem zrozumiałem, że zobaczyliśmy coś, co dla wielu z nas okazało się doświadczeniem przełomowym. Dotknęliśmy przestrzeni: oddechu wolności, czystości, tęsknoty, zachwytu nad pięknem i radością życia, ale i warunku bycia dobrym dla ludzi. Ujrzeliśmy Sukiennice, Bazylikę Mariacką, a nieco bliżej, po prawej stronie, Wieżę Ratuszową. Tak, już kiedyś to przeżyłem… poczułem się jak nad Bałtykiem! Niby wszystko inne: tam Natura i brak detali, a tu Architektura (wówczas nie znałem jeszcze tego pojęcia, wszak mieszkałem w prostym bloku przy ulicy Marii Konopnickiej). Ale – zachwyt ten sam, to samo poczucie onieśmielenia, ten sam niepokój i niepewność wobec czegoś, co widzę po raz pierwszy w życiu. Ten sam chwilowy brak tchu, to samo onieśmielenie i to samo poczucie, że… TO jest takie piękne! Od tamtego czasu niewiele się zmieniło. Upłynęło kilkadziesiąt lat, dobry Pan Bóg obdarował mnie przywilejem codziennego bywania na krakowskim Rynku – a ja ciągle uczę się go od nowa i od nowa.
