The Enlightenment is one of the formative periods of Western history, yet more than 300 years after it began, it remains controversial. It is often seen as the fountainhead of modern values such as human rights, religious toleration, freedom of thought, scientific thought as an exemplary form of reasoning, and rationality and evidence-based argument. Others accuse the Enlightenment of putting forward a scientific rationality which ignores the complexity and variety of human beings, propagates shallow atheism, and aims to subjugate nature to so-called technical progress.
Answering the question 'what is Enlightenment?' Kant famously urged men and women above all to 'have the courage to use your own understanding'. Robertson shows how the thinkers of the Enlightenment did just that, seeking a rounded understanding of humanity in which reason was balanced with emotion and sensibility. Już od czasów Maxa Webera w refleksji naukowej i filozoficznej pojawiała się myśl, że reformacja to nie tylko zjawisko historyczne, ale nade wszystko społeczno-kulturowe. Kojarzą się z nią m.in.: indywidualizm, doświadczeniowość, nowoczesność, innowacja, aktywizm, asceza w świecie, kreatywność, samorefleksja, komunitarianizm, oszczędność, rozwój rachunkowości, krytycyzm, kapitalizm, kultura pisma i druku, odczarowanie, sekularyzacja. To jedynie kilka przykładów zjawisk i wartości wiążących się nierozłącznie z szeroko rozumianą reformacją w kulturze. Samo istnienie reformacji owocuje historycznie pojęciem tolerancji i szacunku dla różnorodności, choć droga do tych wartości nie jest łatwa i bezbolesna. W dniach 22-24 maja 2017 roku odbyła się w Uniwersytecie Łódzkim i Akademii Muzycznej im. Bacewiczów w Łodzi interdyscyplinarna konferencja ze specjalnymi gośćmi z całego świata. Jest śladem tego, że wielokulturowa Łódź uczciła 500 lat reformacji, która przez dziesięciolecia odcisnęła także swój znaczący ślad w tym mieście.
Publikacja jest pokłosiem konferencji naukowej poświęconej Eurypidesowi, zorganizowanej przez Ośrodek Praktyk Teatralnych „Gardzienice”, której 3 sesje odbyły się w latach 2016-2018. Publikacja przeznaczona jest dla filologów, teatrologów i twórców teatru, a także dla studentów filologii klasycznej, nauk o kulturze i teatrologii.
