So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops.
Hopefully, it’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears.
It’s a love letter. To life.

Termin "dizajn", dziś powszechnie używany, mimo że jest niejednoznaczny i wielowymiarowy, to nie na tyle, by odmawiać mu jakiejkolwiek użyteczności poznawczej. W ogólnej odsłonie dizajn odnosi się do współczesności, ujawniając zależności pomiędzy produkcją, konsumpcją i kulturą. Jako wyodrębniony typ działań i praktyk, realizujący wartości społecznej świadomości estetycznej, prężnie funkcjonuje w dzisiejszym świecie. Książka ta ma na celu ukazanie kategorii dizajnu w szerokim kontekście kulturowym, ze zwróceniem szczególnej uwagi na ewolucję tego pojęcia w XX wieku. Dizajn jako ścisły związek sztuki, techniki i życia wymyka się wszelkim definicjom, nie można też jednoznacznie sprowadzić tego zjawiska do konkretnych teorii estetycznych. Odwołując się do Petera Brgera, można przyjąć, że dizajn to sztuka, która zatraciła się w praktyce życiowej, a tracąc do niej dystans, przestała funkcjonować stricte jako sztuka, stając się nowym obszarem poszukiwań i eksperymentów. Dlatego estetyka implicite, o której pisał Władysław Tatarkiewicz, przeniesiona na grunt dizajnu: czerpiąca z praktyki dizajnerów, zawarta w przedmiotach/obiektach/produktach użytkowych, w myśli krytycznej oraz w gustach i smaku danego okresu, wydaje się najbardziej optymalną formą estetycznej analizy tego zjawiska. Taka też analiza jest priorytetem tej pracy, chronologiczny aspekt czasowy zaś pomaga powiązać dizajn z (estetycznym) funkcjonowaniem człowieka od modernistycznych początków XX wieku, poprzez powojenne zmiany i postmodernistyczne rozprężenie estetyczne.

Now he reveals the never-before-told story of his years with the young woman from Port Arthur who would become the first female rock and roll superstarand depart the stage too soon. In 1967, as the new sound of rock and roll was taking over popular music, John Byrne Cooke was at the center of it all. As a member of D.A. Pennebakers film crew, he witnessed the astonishing breakout performances of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival that June. Less than six months later, he was on a plane to San Francisco, taking a job as road manager for Janis and her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. From then on, Cooke was Joplins road manager amid a rotating cast of musicians and personnel, a constant presence behind the scenes as the woman called Pearl took the world by storm. Cooke was there when Janis made the difficult decision to leave Big Brother and form a new band. He was with her when the Kozmic Blues Band toured Europe in the spring of 1969, when they performed at Woodstock in August, and when Janis and Full Tilt Boogie took their famous Festival Express train trip across Canada. He accompanied Janis to her friend and mentor Ken Threadgills 70th birthday party, and was at her side when she attended her tenth high school reunion in Port Arthur, Texas. This intimate memoir spans the years he spent with Janis, from her legendary rise to her tragic last days. Cooke tells the whole incredible story as only someone who lived it could.
