Since 1914 Marcel Duchamp has been called all of these. No artist of the twentieth century has aroused more passion and controversy, nor exerted a greater influence on art--the very essence of which Duchamp challenged and redefined as concept rather than product by questioning its traditionally privileged optical nature. At the same time, he never ceased to be engaged, openly or secretly, in provocative and enigmatic activities and works that transformed traditional art-making procedures. This definitive monograph, written with the enthusiastic support of Duchamp's widow, challenges received ideas, misunderstandings, and misinformation

Manipulation of the photograph is as old as photography itself. It has embodied and enlivened political propaganda, satire, and commercial art and helped visualize the “brave new world” of the future through surreal and fantastic images. Photomontage has been embraced by artists from the late nineteenth century to today, including the Dadaists, John Heartfield, El Lissitzky, Hannah Höch, and Alexander Rodchenko. In this updated classic, art historian Dawn Ades addresses the aesthetic, social, and historical implications of the varied manifestations and uses of manipulated photographs. Revered by artists, critics, and readers alike, this new edition is brought up-to-date to reflect technological developments and changes in visual culture, discussing the work of contemporary artists Kathy Bruce, Linder, Cold War Steve, and others. Photomontage also includes refreshed image reproductions as well as new full-color illustrations.

Dali/Duchamp examines in detail the often-overlooked relationship between two of the twentieth century's most famous artists. Though polar opposites at first glance, Duchamp, the father of conceptual art who rejected painting in 1918; and the more showman-like Dali, the exceptional painter of fantastical landscapes; were united by a combination of humour and scepticism that led both to challenge conventional views of art and life. After meeting in the 1930s through mutual contacts within the Surrealist group, they maintained a firm friendship over the following decades, spending time together in Paris, New York and Catalonia, where Duchamp purchased a summer house in Cadaques, close to Dali's home in Port Lligat. Throughout the book, expert contributors explore themes common to both artists, chief among them eroticism and identity, and both men's surprising engagement with science, optics, religion and myth. Each section is sumptuously illustrated with key pieces from both artists' bodies of work, and features previously unpublished photographs, letters and ephemera that demonstrate the enduring warmth of their friendship. This publication accompanies two exhibitions: 7 October 2017 - 7 January 2018, Royal Academy of Arts, London; and 5 February - 28 May 2018, The Dali Museum, St Petersburg, Florida.
