Książka zawiera rozprawy poświęcone zwierzętom w kulturze staropolskiej – mówi o relacjach człowieka z przyrodą, o szacunku, jakim ją darzył, oraz jego empatii wobec wszystkich stworzeń, a także o definiowaniu humanizmu właśnie za sprawą kontaktów ze światem natury. Tom jest owocem pracy interdyscyplinarnego zespołu badawczego skupionego wokół Pracowni „Humanizm. Hermeneutyka wartości” na Wydziale „Artes Liberales” UW. Reading the Book of Animals.
