The history of tLouvre is closely entwined with the history of France.
Built as a fortress in 1190, it became a royal residence under Francis I, who founded the royal collections. Successive kings all contributed to giving Louvre its familiar appearance.
The building now known as the Louvre came into being under Henri IV when the Grande Galerie was built, joining the Louvre to the Tuileries Palace.
