In its most prestigious exhibition to date, the Fondation Beyeler has devoted itself to the early paintings and sculptures of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) that date from his so-called Blue and Pink periods to early Cubism. The paintings from this stage of his career, all produced between 1901 and 1907, are milestones on the road Picasso took to becoming the most famous artist of the twentieth century. They can be counted among modernism’s most beautiful and most emotional works, and are also some of the most precious works of art ever to exist. This comprehensive exhibition and its companion catalogue feature around eighty masterpieces, most of which are only rarely loaned out by famous museums and private collections around the world.

Claude Monet wanted to capture more than just air and light in impasto paint on canvas, as he explained in a conversation with the Danish author Herman Bang in 1895. The master of light was also a master of shadows and reflections. This is evident in his most famous paintings, such as that of the façade of the Rouen cathedral, or the haystacks painted against light, or in the reflections of the water lilies in the pond at Giverny. In particular, his sun-drenched groves, coastlines, and depictions of the Seine in both summer and winter, demonstrate how Monet revolutionized painting by questioning the conventional notions of what a painting could be.

This publication brings Pablo Picasso's (1881-1973) encounter with the Cretan-born old master Doménikos Theotokópoulos, better known as El Greco (1541-1614), vividly to life. El Greco’s unmistakable painting style won him considerable fame in his day. Soon after his death, however, his work was largely forgotten.
It was only around 1900 that an El Greco revival was launched, with Picasso advancing the cause. His engagement with the Greek-Spanish master not only went far deeper than has previously been assumed but also lasted much longer. From his first encounter with El Greco's works shortly before 1900 until the end of his life, Picasso not only referenced but engaged in a fascinating artistic dialogue with the old master.

The Polish photographer and filmmaker Tomasz Gudzowaty is actually known for his perfection—clear compositions, precisely chosen image frames, carefully considered down to the last detail. However, the approach to his Sumo series is completely different. For his photographic tribute to the Japanese national sport Sumo, Gudzowaty confronts his subject with the rebellious aesthetic of “are-bure-bokeh”, which means rough, blurred, out of focus. This style developed in Japan in the 1960s as a countercurrent to the prevailing norm of photojournalism of the time. With the help of photography, Gudzowaty attempts to create a visual language that is able to capture documents beyond words. With the publication Sumo he presents a previously unknown side of his artistic work.
