Das Jahr 1967 war folgenreich: Kalifornier erinnern den Aufstieg der Hippie-Bewegung in Los Angeles und San Francisco, deutsche Zeitgenossen wiederum die Entstehung der RAF und die Fans zeitgenössischer Fotografie eine maßgebliche Fotoausstellung im Museum of Modern Art, New York: Kurator John Szarkowski stellte unter dem Titel New Documents drei Fotografen – Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander und Garry Winogrand – mit jeweils etwa dreißig Werken in einer Gemeinschaftsausstellung vor, die in die sozialdokumentarische Fotografie der Zukunft einen kühleren Ton einbringen sollte.
Mit New Documents war die noch von Edward Steichen propagierte Family of Man-Stimmung der Fotografie endgültig Vergangenheit. New Documents reiste durch die Museen der Vereinigten Staaten, die Ausstellung wie die drei beteiligten Fotografen erlangten Kultstatus. Der Erfolg war umso erstaunlicher, als keinerlei Budget für einen Katalog vorhanden war. Zum 50. Jubiläum wird diese Unterlassungssünde nun gesühnt. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem MoMA legt Schirmer/Mosel die deutschsprachige Ausgabe des Katalogs vor, mit allen Bildern und vielen Dokumenten zu dieser sagenumwobenen Ausstellung, die der Gegenwartsfotografie eine neue Richtung gab.
Von den drei Fotografen ist heute nur noch Lee Friedlander unter uns, er lebt 82-jährig in New York City.

One of the most beautiful books on the history of fashion ever produced is now back in print. Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884) is one of the heroes of early French photography. A pioneer of innovative processes, he also made history as an instructor for a whole generation of French photographers and the initiator and outstanding architectural photographer of the mission heliographique documenting France's historical monuments. Le Gray, who originally studied painting, is also considered to be the founder of artistic photography. He was one of the first to follow the painters to Fontainebleau to do his own photographic studies of nature. In the mid-1850s, he started to produce sea and cloud studies in Normandy and on the western coast of the Mediterranean; these made him an overnight sensation among amateurs and collectors and earned him the admiration of the Impressionists. Fleeing from creditors, in 1860 he set off with Alexandre Dumas for Italy. He spent the last 20 years of his life in Cairo, taking photos and working as a drawing tutor. Today, Le Gray's prints are among the most expensive in the world.
