? Nino Rota (1911-1979) is mainly known as one of Italy’s most famous film
music composers. However, he wrote an impressive and substantial
oeuvre of “classical music”, works of great spontaneity, lyricism, and
melodic invention. His style is eclectic, with hints of neoclassicism, folklore
and remnants of late-romantic nostalgia.
? This new recording presents Rota’s Clarinet Sonata, Clarinet Trio,
incidental music for clarinet solo and the Variations and Fugue in 12 keys
on the name of B.A.C.H., for piano solo.
? Played with obvious enjoyment and “brille” by three Italians, clarinettist
Rocco Parisi, cellist Andrea Favalessa and pianist Gabriele Rota, son of the
composer.

Darius Milhaud is one of the most colourful and versatile composers of
20th century France.
Milhaud was active in all fields and genres of composition: opera, choral,
orchestral, chamber and solo works, a prolific writer and bold spirit, a
member of the French composer’s group “Les Six”, a modernist influenced
by jazz, polytonality and Brazilian culture.
This new recording contains the complete violin and viola sonatas, highly
attractive works in which the formal structures of the sonata form are
imbued with the temperament, colours and perfumes of the Provence,
the natural habitat of Darius Milhaud.
Excellent performances by Mauro Tortorelli, who plays both violin and
viola, and pianist Angela Meluso, who already successfully recorded for
Brilliant Classics the Violin Sonatas by Saint-Saëns (BC94848), which
received 4 and 5 star reviews in the international press.

? First recording of harpsichord sonatas by Josep Gallés.
? Harpsichordist Michele Benuzzi found in the Bibioteca de Catalunya in
Barcelona the manuscript of 23 keyboard sonatas by Spanish composer
Josep Gallés (1758-1836). Gallés was a transitory composer gapping the
bridge between Baroque and Classical, like Domenico Scarlatti, whose
sonatas they clearly resemble.
? The Sonatas are in one movement in binary form. His style took the
heritage of Scarlatti using many of the folkloristic patterns of Spanish
music such as guitar-like arpeggios, alternations of major and minor,
exotic scales, dance rhythms, use of syncopations and crossed hands as
well as the use of extravagant modulations and enharmonic passages.
? A true find by Michele Benuzzi, who already presented newly discovered
keyboard works by Nichelmann (BC94809) and Hässler (BC94293,
“Excellent…one of the most interesting CD’s I have heard of late” Musicweb).

? Juan Bautista Comes (1582-1643) is one of the most significant composers
of the early Spanish baroque, linking elements of Renaissance style with
the emerging techniques and tastes of the Baroque. He was a famous
musician of his time, and he held the prestigious post of chapel master of
the Valencia Cathedral. Since 1437 this cathedral kept the Holy Chalice,
the cup that Jesus used at the Last Supper, the reason Comes wrote
extensively for the Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament.
? Apart from the sacred Motets this new recording contains a selection of
Villancicos, choral works written in the vernacular, based on popular
music, written with the aim to make the liturgy more understandable for
the common people. They were written in polychoral style, lending a
theatrical and monumental character to the text and music.
? Excellent performances by the Spanish vocal ensemble Amystis Chamber
Choir, who already recorded successfully for Brilliant Classics the complete
choral works by Cabanilles (BC94781).

Paolo Tosti (1846-1916) worked in poverty as a music teacher till he met the influential composer Giovanni Sgambati, who became his mentor. He introduced Tosti to Princess Margherita of Savoy, who became later queen of Italy. She was impressed by him and appointed him as royal music teacher. In 1875 Tosti went to London where his fame spread, and he was made Singing Master of the Royal family. Tosti is known for his vast quantity of light, expressive songs, which are characterised by natural, singable melodies of a charming and sweet sentiment. They became immensely popular and Tosti made a fortune with them. This new project, a huge enterprise, is produced by the Tosti Institute in Italy, presenting an impressive line of excellent Italian singers: Monica Bacelli, Valentina Mastrangelo, Maura Menghini, David Sotgiu, Nunzio Fazzini, Romina Casucci, and many more, the pianists include Marco Scolastra and Roberto Rupo.

Mario Gangi (1923-2010) was one of the most important protagonists of
the guitar in 20th century Italy. A performer of world rank he also did
extensive scholarly work to promote the publication and performances of
contemporary guitar works.

technique: scales, arpeggios, repeated notes, polyphony, melodic use of
the thumb. But far from being dry exercises they reveal a warm musical

? Dedicated to Pope Paul V, Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 is one of the
great masterpieces of the early Baroque. The score features an amazing
variety of styles – grand choral and instrumental, solo motets, two settings
of the Magnificat, duets and trios in the latest monodic style, and above
all, a sense of theatre, which might be explained by Monteverdi’s
composition of two operas at around the same time, L’Orfeo and
L’Arianna.
