? This set contains the complete music for piano by Erik Satie, including the
works for 4 hands.
? Satie’s piano music became immensely popular in the 70’s of the last
century, when pianists like Reinbert de Leeuw and Aldo Ciccolini took it
out of the realm of “serious classical music”. Especially the Gymnopédies
and Gnossiennes became “Music for the Millons” and adorned many
amateur’s piano stand.
? This set proves however that there is much more than the Gymnopédies.
Satie created a whole world of revolutionary aesthetics, mixing the serious
with the absurd, the sense and the nonsense, the surreal and the banal.
He had immense influence on composers after him, including Cage,
Stravinsky and the Minimalists like Glass, Nyman and others.
? Pianist Jeroen van Veen, the Champion of Minimalism, is the ideal
interpreter of Satie, his playing, quasi-naive, is hypnotic, entering another
sound and time dimension.

This year 2016 sees the commemoration of the death of Max Reger (1873-
1916), one of the most intriguing and misunderstood German Romantics.
Reger’s Clarinet Sonatas Op. 49 are clearly modelled on the clarinet
sonatas Op. 120 by Brahms. Characteristic are the long melodic lines, the
intense, intertwining dialogue between the two instruments, the
extended chromatic harmony and the overall complexity of both texture
and counterpoint.
Beautiful performance by Italian clarinettist Claudio Conti, prize winner of
several international competitions, and Roberta Bambace, piano.

Tommaso Giordani (1730-1806) was born in Naples, Italy, but his extensive
travels brought him to London, where he built his career until his death.
He wrote an immense amount of music: best known as an opera composer
he also wrote chamber music for various instruments.
Giordani’s sonatas Opus 4 are for violin and keyboard, either harpsichord,
fortepiano or organ. They are delightful 2-movement works in the Galante
Style, like his fellow émigré Johann Christian Bach. The writing for the
instruments, especially the keyboard, is of an advanced virtuosity, rich in
scales, arpeggios, octave runs and fast passage work.
Excellent performances by the Lithuanian violinist Lina Uinskyte and
keyboard player Marco Ruggeri, who already made a beautiful recording
for Brilliant Classics of sonatas by J.C. Bach (BC 94965).

Michael Nyman (born 1944) is one of the most famous and successful film
music composers of our time. His music, although inextricably connected
with the visual action of a film, has the quality to stand on its own, to
evoke and express the visual emotions in sounds only.
Nyman’s most famous film score is of the film “The Piano” , becoming an

? Domenico Zipoli (1688-1726) led an turbulent and adventurous life. A
student of Alessandro Scarlatti and Pasquini he held important posts as
organist and composer in Florence and Rome. However he went to Spain
to join the Jesuit Society from where he was sent to South America, where
he settled in Cordoba (Argentina) as missionary and composer.
? Zipoli wrote in the Italian keyboard style as a worthy successor of
Frescobaldi, Scarlatti and Pasquini. He wrote for both organ and
harpsichord, and both instruments are included in this new recording of
his complete output for the keyboard.
? Played by Carlo Guandalino on a historical 1612 organ of Castelnuovo
Scrivia, and by Laura Farabollini on a copy of a 17th century French Taskin
harpsichord.
